Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC) is a spectacular journey into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by a circle of some of the world’s most majestic mountains. At 4,130 meters, the base camp lies beneath the towering Annapurna I (8,091 m)—the tenth highest mountain in the world. This trek is perfect for those who want a high-altitude Himalayan experience with a rich blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and biodiversity.

Beginning from the beautiful city of Pokhara, the trail winds through charming Gurung and Magar villages, lush rhododendron forests, cascading waterfalls, and terraced farmlands. As you ascend through Chomrong, Dovan, and Deurali, you witness a gradual transformation of landscape, with dense vegetation giving way to alpine meadows and rugged Himalayan terrain. Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition ensures your journey is not only well-paced and safe, but also immersive—offering insights into the local way of life, history, and mountain lore.

Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The best seasons to trek to Annapurna Base Camp are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer the most stable weather, clear skies, and optimal trekking conditions. In spring, the forests come alive with blooming rhododendrons, vibrant wildflowers, and pleasant temperatures. This season also offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks against lush green valleys.

Autumn, on the other hand, is known for its crystal-clear mountain views and cooler, drier weather. It's the peak season for trekking due to excellent visibility and a festive atmosphere in Nepal with Dashain and Tihar celebrations. While winter (December to February) is also possible for experienced trekkers, it requires preparation for cold conditions. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to slippery trails and limited visibility. Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition helps you plan your trek based on seasonal weather forecasts and individual preferences to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Difficulty

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is rated as a moderate trek, making it accessible to both beginners and experienced trekkers. The highest elevation is 4,130 meters, which is significantly lower than Everest Base Camp, making altitude sickness less common. However, the trek still requires good physical conditioning as it involves daily hikes of 5–7 hours, with a mix of uphill climbs, stone staircases, and descents.

One of the most challenging sections is the steep ascent from Chomrong to Sinuwa, and again from Deurali to ABC, where the elevation gain is rapid. Proper pacing, rest days, and acclimatization stops are crucial for a safe and successful trek. Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition structures the itinerary to minimize strain and maximize your enjoyment, with experienced guides who offer encouragement, first aid, and real-time health monitoring throughout the trek.

Food and Accommodation During Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Accommodation during the ABC trek consists of teahouses or guesthouses, which offer basic but clean rooms, often with twin beds and shared bathrooms. In lower-altitude villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, Chomrong, and Jhinu Danda, you'll find more comfortable lodging with hot showers and charging facilities. As you ascend to higher altitudes like Deurali and ABC, facilities become simpler, but Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition ensures you get the best available options at every stop.

Meals on the trail are filling, nutritious, and designed to keep your energy levels up. Typical menus include dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, pasta, soups, pancakes, porridge, and local specialties like Tibetan bread. Vegetarians are well-catered for, and dietary preferences or restrictions can be accommodated. We also ensure proper food hygiene and safe drinking water—either bottled or purified—so your meals are not only satisfying but safe for consumption.

Why Choose Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers a unique blend of scenic beauty, cultural richness, and high-altitude adventure in a relatively shorter time compared to other Himalayan treks. The ever-changing landscapes, from subtropical forests to alpine wilderness, provide an unforgettable backdrop to every step of the journey. The trek passes through traditional villages, allowing you to witness and engage with local Gurung and Magar cultures, their lifestyle, customs, and warm hospitality.

The relatively moderate difficulty level, shorter itinerary (typically 10–14 days), and lower altitude make this trek ideal for a wider range of travelers, including first-time trekkers, solo adventurers, and families with active teenagers. It’s a chance to witness sunrises over Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak), soak in natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda, and stand beneath some of the highest peaks in the world. With Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition, your journey is carefully curated, ensuring comfort, safety, and authentic experience from beginning to end.

Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition will warmly welcome you and provide a comfortable transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city. After checking in and taking some time to rest or freshen up, you'll be escorted to the company’s office for a pre-trek briefing at Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition. Here, your trek leader will explain the trek itinerary in detail, check your gear, and ensure you're fully prepared. This meeting also gives you the chance to ask questions and meet your fellow trekkers. The rest of the day is free to explore Kathmandu’s bustling streets or enjoy a traditional Nepali dinner before a good night’s rest.

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to the tourist bus station for a scenic drive to Pokhara, one of Nepal’s most beautiful lakeside cities. The journey takes around 6–8 hours and offers incredible views of rivers, lush countryside, and occasional glimpses of Himalayan peaks. During the drive, you’ll pass through vibrant towns and terraced farmland. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you'll check into your hotel and have the rest of the day free. You can take a relaxing walk around Phewa Lake, visit local cafés, or admire the reflection of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) on the water. Pokhara offers the perfect blend of nature and culture, giving you a peaceful environment before your trek begins.

Today begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Birethanti, the starting point of your trek. After checking in at the Annapurna Conservation Area checkpoint, the real adventure begins. You’ll trek along a picturesque trail, following the Modi Khola river through small villages and terraced fields. The path steadily ascends, passing through lush forests and traditional Magar settlements. The final portion of the day includes a challenging climb up a long stone staircase leading to Ulleri, a beautiful village perched on a hillside. The views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli begin to emerge, offering a taste of the Himalayan majesty to come. After a fulfilling day, you'll settle into a cozy teahouse for the night.

Leaving Ulleri, the trail continues to ascend through dense rhododendron and oak forests. This part of the trek is particularly beautiful in spring, when the rhododendrons bloom in brilliant colors. You’ll pass through small settlements like Banthanti and Nangethanti, taking breaks to enjoy the serenity and catch your breath. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler and fresher, and the towering peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges begin to come into view. Eventually, you'll reach Ghorepani, a charming village set beneath the massive Dhaulagiri range. From here, the views are spectacular, and you’ll prepare for an early start the next day to catch the sunrise at nearby Poon Hill.

Rise early today for a pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill, one of the most famous viewpoints in Nepal. The 45-minute climb in the dark is rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise over a panorama of Himalayan giants, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and more. After soaking in the views and taking photos, you’ll return to Ghorepani for breakfast. The trek then continues through rhododendron forests, climbing up and down along ridges with occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. The trail to Tadapani is scenic and rich in biodiversity, often filled with the sounds of birds and the rustling of trees. Tadapani offers a peaceful place to rest, with close-up views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.

Today’s trek descends steeply through lush forests filled with bamboo and rhododendron. As you descend, you'll cross small streams and traverse narrow paths through terraced hillsides. After a gentle ascent and descent, you’ll reach Gurjung village before continuing onward to Chomrong, a large Gurung village set against the dramatic backdrop of Annapurna South. Chomrong is a pivotal point in the Annapurna Sanctuary trek, offering majestic views and a warm local atmosphere. From here, you'll see the route that leads up the Modi Khola Valley toward the Base Camp. After a long but rewarding day, relax in one of Chomrong’s cozy lodges and enjoy a hearty meal.

The trail from Chomrong descends to the Chomrong Khola, crossed by a suspension bridge, then climbs steeply up to Sinuwa, offering spectacular views along the way. The path then winds through thick forests of bamboo and rhododendron, leading to the peaceful village of Bamboo, where you can rest and refuel. The final push takes you to Dovan, a small settlement tucked in the forest, where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature and the soothing sound of the Modi Khola river. This area feels much more remote and isolated, giving a true sense of trekking in the wilderness.

Leaving Dovan, you’ll walk through lush bamboo and rhododendron forests as you continue climbing along the river valley. The trail becomes steeper and more dramatic, with views of waterfalls, steep cliffs, and avalanche-prone zones. You’ll pass by Himalaya Hotel and Hinku Cave, both known landmarks along the route. As the altitude increases, vegetation becomes sparse, and the landscape opens up to wide alpine valleys. After several hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Deurali, situated just below the towering peaks. The environment here feels raw and rugged, with an increased sense of adventure as you approach the sanctuary. Rest well in preparation for the ascent to base camp tomorrow.

Today is the highlight of your trek. From Deurali, you’ll ascend gradually through alpine meadows to Machhapuchhre Base Camp, where views of the sacred Fishtail Mountain and surrounding peaks are nothing short of awe-inspiring. After a short break, continue your climb into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheater surrounded by peaks over 7000 meters. The final stretch to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is breathtaking, with glaciers and icefalls creating a dramatic landscape. Once at ABC, take time to explore and soak in the 360-degree panorama featuring Annapurna I, South, Hiunchuli, and other mighty summits. The thin air and grand scenery make this a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

After experiencing sunrise over the Himalayas from Annapurna Base Camp, you’ll begin your descent, retracing your steps past Machhapuchhre Base Camp and down to Deurali. The downward trail offers different perspectives and allows you to appreciate the landscape in new ways. You’ll pass through bamboo forests and cross waterfalls before reaching Dovan and continuing on to Sinuwa. Though the day involves a long descent, the trail is less taxing and allows for plenty of rest breaks. Once at Sinuwa, enjoy a hot meal, a warm shower, and the comforts of a well-earned rest after the previous high-altitude days.

Today's trek descends from Sinuwa back to Chomrong, then drops steeply down to Jhinu Danda, a peaceful village famous for its natural hot springs. After reaching Jhinu, take a short 20-minute hike down to the riverside where you can soak in the soothing hot pools next to the Modi Khola river—a perfect way to relax tired muscles after days of trekking. The village itself is scenic and tranquil, with great views and friendly locals. This will be your last night on the trail, so enjoy the serene atmosphere, hearty local food, and reflections on the journey.

After breakfast, you’ll walk a short distance from Jhinu to the nearby Jeep Station, where a shared vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Pokhara. The bumpy ride along rural mountain roads offers final glimpses of village life and the Himalayan foothills. Once back in Pokhara, check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing afternoon. You can spend your time boating on Phewa Lake, visiting the World Peace Pagoda, or simply lounging at one of the city’s lakeside cafés. After the rugged days on the trail, Pokhara offers comfort, food, and great scenery to unwind.

Today you’ll return to Kathmandu by deluxe tourist bus, retracing the scenic journey through lush countryside, terraced fields, and riverside towns. The drive takes approximately 6–8 hours. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, check into your hotel and enjoy your final evening in Nepal. You may choose to explore Thamel, do some souvenir shopping, or join the Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition team for a farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant with cultural performances. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate your successful trek and share memories with your fellow travelers.

Depending on your flight time, a representative from Mountain Holiday Treks & Expedition will transfer you to the airport for your international departure. If you have extra time, the team can help you arrange additional sightseeing or short excursions around Kathmandu Valley. As you head home, take with you the unforgettable memories, friendships, and sense of accomplishment from your journey to Annapurna Base Camp.
